Can I set up xbox live with an ethernet cord and a router in my room connecting to my modem downstairs?

Ok, I am SO confused on how to set up xbox live. I have a friend that told me that all I need is an ethernet cord, and a router. He said that you plug one end of the ethernet cord into the 360, and the other end into the router, and it will connect to your modem to your PC. Does this method work?

If the router and the modem are connected, it will work. Then when you turn your 360 on, click on connect to X-Box Live. Creating a Silver account is free. You can have other X-Box Live friends and upload high scores, but you can’t online multiplayer. Gold membership costs $50 a year, but it’s worth it. When my fiance started a Silver account not to long ago, she got a free month of X-Box Live Gold.
